A LIFE IN FOOTBALL
Karim Benzema
b. 1987 · Athlete
Early Life
Karim Mostafa Benzema was born on December 19, 1987, in Lyon, France, to parents of Algerian and Kabyle descent. He was one of six children in a family that lived in the working-class Bron-Terraillon neighborhood of Lyon, and he began drawing attention from scouts as young as age eight.
Benzema joined Olympique Lyonnais’s youth academy around 1997 and rose steadily through its ranks, making his professional debut for the club on January 15, 2005, against Metz, in which he provided an assist in a 2-0 victory. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising young strikers in French football.
Rise to Fame
Benzema spent four seasons in Lyon’s first team, helping the club win multiple Ligue 1 titles and developing a reputation as a clinical, technically gifted forward. His performances made him one of the most sought-after young players in Europe, and in July 2009 he transferred to Real Madrid for around €35 million — a French record transfer fee at the time.
His early years in Madrid were a period of adjustment, as he worked to establish himself in a star-studded squad, but by the early 2010s he had become an indispensable part of the team’s attack, forming the famous “BBC” trio alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale from 2013 to 2018 — one of the most feared attacking lines in modern football.
Career Highlights
Over 14 seasons at Real Madrid, Benzema made 438 appearances and scored 238 goals, winning five UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, three Copa del Rey trophies, and 25 trophies in total. After Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, Benzema stepped into the role of the team’s primary attacking threat and thrived, delivering some of the best form of his career in his thirties.
That form culminated in an extraordinary 2021-22 season, in which he finished as the Champions League’s top scorer with 15 goals, led Real Madrid to another European title, and was named UEFA Player of the Year. His performances that season earned him the 2022 Ballon d’Or, making him just the fifth Frenchman to win football’s most prestigious individual award.
Benzema also had a lengthy, complicated relationship with the France national team, from which he was excluded for several years amid a personal legal matter before returning in 2021. He went on to help France reach the final of the 2022 World Cup, though a late injury prevented him from playing in the tournament itself. In June 2023, Benzema signed with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad on a free transfer worth up to $100 million annually, captaining the club to the 2024-25 league title with 21 goals in 28 matches, before transferring to Al-Hilal in January 2026.
Personal Life
Benzema has largely kept his personal life private, though he has spoken about his Algerian heritage and his connection to his hometown of Lyon throughout his career. He has faced periods of public scrutiny off the pitch, including the legal matter that contributed to his years away from the French national team, a saga he has said motivated him to keep proving himself on the field.
Since relocating to Saudi Arabia, Benzema has also become a prominent ambassador for the country’s rapidly growing football league, helping raise its international profile alongside other major stars who made similar moves in the same period.
Net Worth & Legacy
Karim Benzema’s net worth is estimated at around $200 million, built from a combination of his Real Madrid salary over 14 years, his lucrative Saudi Pro League contracts with Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal, and endorsement deals with major brands including Adidas.
With over 500 career goals across all competitions, five Champions League titles, a Ballon d’Or, and a place as France’s all-time top scorer in Champions League history with 90 goals, Benzema has cemented his place as one of the great strikers of his generation — a player whose patient rise from Lyon’s academy to the top of world football has become a defining modern success story.
