A LIFE ON SCREEN
Zendaya
b. 1996 · Actress
Early Life
Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California, to Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, a teacher of Black American and Nigerian ancestry, and Claire Stoermer, a theater manager of German and Scottish heritage. Her name comes from the Shona word “Tendai,” meaning “to give thanks.” She was a reserved student but energetic at home, and her parents had her repeat kindergarten to help build her confidence.
She began performing as a child model and dancer before landing her breakthrough role as Rocky Blue on Disney Channel’s Shake It Up, which premiered in 2010 to 6.2 million viewers — the network’s second-highest-rated debut at the time. She went on to star in and help produce K.C. Undercover from 2015 to 2018, where she pushed the network to feature a Black family and a lead character defined by intelligence rather than a performing talent.
Rise to Fame
Zendaya’s feature film debut as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) introduced her to a global audience, in a film that grossed more than $880 million worldwide, and she appeared the same year in The Greatest Showman alongside Zac Efron.
Beginning in 2019, she took on the role of Rue Bennett, a teenager struggling with addiction, in HBO’s Euphoria. At age 24, in 2020, she became the youngest performer ever to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and when she won a second Emmy for the role in 2022, she became the youngest two-time acting winner in the award’s history.
Career Highlights
Zendaya starred as Chani Kynes in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2021) and its sequel Dune: Part Two (2024), and earned Golden Globe recognition for her role opposite Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers (2024). In 2026, she became one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood, reprising Rue in Euphoria’s third and final season, starring opposite Robert Pattinson in The Drama, playing the goddess Athena in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and returning as MJ in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — while also filming Dune: Part Three.
Beyond acting, Zendaya has become one of fashion’s most closely watched red-carpet figures, known for “method dressing” that ties her outfits to the themes of her films; she became the youngest-ever recipient of the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in November 2021 and has served as a brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger, Louis Vuitton, and Prada. She was named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2022.
Personal Life
Zendaya confirmed a relationship with her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland in November 2021. The couple became engaged in December 2024 and married in 2026, with the news first surfacing when her longtime stylist Law Roach mentioned it at the 32nd Actor Awards in March 2026; Holland confirmed the marriage in a June 2026 interview with Esquire UK, and the couple later held a private wedding celebration in Surrey, England.
An outspoken advocate on social and political issues, Zendaya has participated in demonstrations for racial justice, supported voting-rights and education-access initiatives, and partnered with organizations including UNICEF, UNAIDS, and Google.org, which funded computer science curricula in Oakland schools in her honor.
Net Worth & Legacy
Zendaya’s net worth is estimated in the tens of millions of dollars, built through a run of major film and television roles, fashion and beauty brand partnerships, and producing credits across her television projects.
From a Disney Channel dancer in Oakland to a record-setting Emmy winner, a central figure in two of modern science fiction’s biggest franchises, and one of fashion’s most influential young style icons, Zendaya has built a career defined by range and deliberate choices — an actress who has moved fluidly between blockbuster franchises and prestige drama while staying rooted in the causes and community that shaped her.
