A LIFE IN ACTION

Jackie Chan

b. 1954 · Actor

Early Life

Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-sang on April 7, 1954, in British Hong Kong, to Charles and Lee-lee Chan, political refugees who had fled mainland China. He spent part of his childhood at the French consul’s residence on Victoria Peak, where his parents worked, before being enrolled at age 10 in the China Drama Academy, a grueling Peking Opera school run by Master Yu Jim-yuen.

At the academy, Chan trained intensively for years in martial arts, acrobatics, singing, and acting, becoming part of a performing troupe known as the Seven Little Fortunes and forming lifelong friendships with fellow students Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao — the three later dubbed the “Three Dragons” of Hong Kong action cinema. He also trained in multiple martial arts disciplines, including earning a black belt in hapkido.

Rise to Fame

Chan appeared in minor film roles as a child before landing his breakthrough with Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master, both released in 1978, which combined martial arts with comedic timing and made him a star across Asia. He made his directorial debut the following year with The Fearless Hyena.

Through the 1980s, Chan refined a signature style built on elaborate, dangerous stunts blended with martial arts and slapstick comedy, officially forming the Jackie Chan Stunt Team during production of Project A (1983). Films including Police Story (1985) and Armour of God (1986) cemented him as Hong Kong cinema’s biggest star, and by the mid-1990s he had also become a dominant box office draw across East Asia, particularly Japan.

Career Highlights

After limited early attempts to break into Hollywood in the 1980s, Chan found his North American breakthrough with Rumble in the Bronx (1995), followed by the massive success of Rush Hour (1998) alongside Chris Tucker, which grossed more than $130 million domestically and launched a trilogy. His filmography now spans seven decades and more than $6 billion in worldwide box office gross, including the Shanghai Noon films, The Forbidden Kingdom (his first film alongside Jet Li), the 2010 Karate Kid remake, and, more recently, Karate Kid: Legends and Unexpected Family, both released in 2025.

Famous for performing the vast majority of his own stunts — he has said insurance companies have refused to cover his productions — Chan holds the Guinness World Record for most stunts performed by a living actor, and has suffered numerous serious injuries over his career, including a fractured skull and dislocated pelvis. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 2016 for his extraordinary contributions to film, has stars on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars, and has also built a parallel career as a recording artist, releasing roughly 20 albums since 1984 and voicing lead roles in the Chinese-language versions of Mulan and the Kung Fu Panda franchise.

Personal Life

Chan married Taiwanese actress Joan Lin in December 1982; their son, Jaycee, was born the following day. He has a daughter, Etta Ng Chok Lam, from a relationship with actress Elaine Ng in 1999, though he has publicly stated he has never met her. Chan is multilingual, speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and several other languages, and in January 2026 he publicly disclosed that he has ADHD.

Beyond acting, Chan has built a business portfolio that includes restaurants and fitness clubs bearing his name, and he has been extensively involved in philanthropy, founding the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988 and the Dragon’s Heart Foundation in 2005 to build schools and support elderly communities in remote regions of China; he has pledged to donate half his assets to charity upon his death. He has also held academic roles, including teaching at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and serving as dean of a film academy in Wuhan.

Net Worth & Legacy

Jackie Chan’s net worth is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars, built over a seven-decade career spanning acting, stunt work, music, business ventures, and box office receipts totaling billions of dollars worldwide.

From a child enduring years of brutal training at a Hong Kong opera school to arguably the most recognizable action star in film history, Chan redefined what a stunt performer and leading man could be, blending genuine physical risk with comic timing in a body of work that has entertained audiences across multiple generations and continents.
