THE VOICE THAT BROUGHT GRUNGE TO THE MAINSTREAM

Kurt Cobain

1967-1994 · Musician

Early Life

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, a working-class logging town. His parents divorced when he was seven, an event he later described as deeply affecting, and he moved between relatives' homes throughout his teenage years.

He developed an early interest in art and music, teaching himself guitar as a teenager and becoming immersed in the Pacific Northwest punk and underground rock scene that would shape his sound.

Rise to Fame

Cobain co-founded Nirvana in 1987 with bassist Krist Novoselic, and the band signed with the independent label Sub Pop, releasing their debut album Bleach in 1989. The band's raw sound and DIY ethic connected with the Pacific Northwest underground scene.

Everything changed with the 1991 release of Nevermind on DGC Records. Led by the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the album became an unexpected commercial phenomenon, propelling Nirvana to global fame and bringing the grunge and alternative rock movement into the mainstream almost overnight.

Career Highlights

Nirvana followed Nevermind with 1993's In Utero, a deliberately rawer and more abrasive album that showcased Cobain's songwriting range and resistance to being packaged as a mainstream pop act. The band's live performances, including their 1993 MTV Unplugged session, are still regarded among the most acclaimed of the era.

Cobain became known as one of rock's most influential songwriters and guitarists, credited with helping redefine popular music in the early 1990s and inspiring generations of alternative rock artists that followed.

Personal Life

Cobain married musician Courtney Love, frontwoman of the band Hole, in 1992; the couple had a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, later that year. He struggled publicly and privately with chronic health issues, substance addiction, and depression throughout his life.

Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994, at his home in Seattle, at the age of 27. His death was a profound loss to the music world and remains one of the most discussed moments in rock history.

Net Worth & Legacy

Cobain's estate, including Nirvana's catalog and songwriting royalties, has generated substantial ongoing value in the decades since his death, with his likeness and legacy continuing to be widely licensed and celebrated.

From a small logging town in Washington to the frontman of one of the most influential bands in rock history, Cobain's brief career left a lasting mark on popular music, and Nirvana remains one of the defining acts of a generation.
