FROM SOUTH BANK STREET SHOWS TO A GRAMMY-WINNING BREAKTHROUGH

Olivia Dean

b. 1999 · Musician

Early Life

Olivia Lauryn Dean was born on March 14, 1999, in Haringey, London. Her father is English, and her mother, Christine, is a barrister of Jamaican and Guyanese heritage; her maternal grandmother Carmen arrived in Britain from Guyana as part of the Windrush generation, and Dean received her middle name from her mother’s admiration of Lauryn Hill.

Growing up in Highams Park, Dean was surrounded by diverse musical influences, with her mother introducing her to soul artists like Jill Scott and Lauryn Hill and her father favoring Carole King and Al Green. At 15, she was accepted to the BRIT School in Croydon, initially studying musical theatre before switching her focus to songwriting after a Paul Simon performance sparked her passion for it at 17.

Rise to Fame

Dean began performing street shows on London’s South Bank at 17, earning minimal income, before her high school graduation concert impressed manager Emily Braham, leading to work as a backing vocalist for Rudimental. In October 2018, she self-released "Reason to Stay," which went viral and led to a 2019 recording contract.

Her debut EP, OK Love You Bye, arrived in November 2019, and during the COVID-19 pandemic she conducted a creative "From Me to You" tour performing out of a branded truck. Her debut album, Messy, released in June 2023, featured the breakout single "Dive" and earned her a Mercury Prize nomination.

Career Highlights

Dean’s second album, The Art of Loving, released in September 2025, topped the UK charts, with "Man I Need" becoming her first UK number-one single and reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her collaboration with Sam Fender, "Rein Me In," released in June 2025, became the longest-running UK number-one single of all time, holding the top spot for 23 weeks by July 2026 and breaking a 73-year-old record.

In February 2026, Dean won four Brit Awards, including British Artist of the Year, Best Pop Act, British Album of the Year, and Song of the Year for "Rein Me In," and she also won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist that same month, dedicating her speech to her grandmother and speaking about immigrant contributions to Britain. Billboard named her Rookie of the Year in January 2026, and she became the first female solo artist with four singles simultaneously in the UK Top 10.

Personal Life

Dean has been in a relationship with drummer Eddie Burns, a member of Clairo’s band, since April 2025. She serves as a brand ambassador for Chanel, Burberry, and Hourglass, and describes herself as a strong feminist; her mother became the first Black deputy leader of a political party in Europe when she led the Women’s Equality Party in 2020. Dean is also a supporter of West Ham United F.C.

She performed at Glastonbury in both 2024, a childhood dream, and 2025, made her Saturday Night Live debut in November 2025, and publicly criticized Ticketmaster’s resale practices, successfully securing refund protections and price caps for her fans.

Net Worth & Legacy

Olivia Dean’s net worth is estimated in the low millions of dollars, built through album sales, streaming, touring, and brand partnerships accumulated over a rapidly ascending career.

From busking on the South Bank to becoming a Grammy-winning, chart-topping artist with the longest-running number-one single in UK chart history, Dean’s rise reflects both a distinctive soul-influenced sound and an outspoken advocacy for fans, and her announced Art of Loving Live tour across the U.S. and Europe suggests her ascent is only accelerating.
