Walter Koenig, who played navigator Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series and in seven Star Trek feature films, died Sunday night, October 25, 2026, at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was 90. His talent representative, Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the death on Monday and said Koenig died of old age with his daughter, Danielle, and his niece at his side. Koenig had turned 90 on September 14.
His death leaves William Shatner and George Takei as the last two surviving principal cast members of the original series. For a full look at his life and career, see our memorial tribute, Walter Koenig (1936–2026): Remembering Star Trek’s Original Chekov.
From Chekov to Bester
Koenig joined Star Trek in its second season in 1967. Chekov, a young Russian officer on the Enterprise bridge at the height of the Cold War, was planned as a recurring part but quickly became a regular. The show ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969 and found a huge second life in reruns and at fan conventions.
Koenig returned as Chekov in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and every original-cast film after it, through Star Trek Generations (1994). His hunt for “nuclear wessels” in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home became one of the franchise’s best-known moments. In 2023 he was heard one last time in Star Trek: Picard, voicing Federation President Anton Chekov, Pavel’s son.
A generation of science fiction fans also knows him as Alfred Bester, the menacing Psi Corps telepath on Babylon 5 in the 1990s, a role Koenig called one of his favorites. He was a writer too: he wrote the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “The Infinite Vulcan,” scripts for Land of the Lost and Family, the behind-the-scenes book Chekov’s Enterprise, and the autobiography Warped Factors. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012.
Tributes
George Takei, who sat beside Koenig at the Enterprise helm as Sulu, posted a tribute on Monday recalling nearly six decades of friendship. Koenig was the best man at Takei’s 2008 wedding to Brad Altman, which fell on Koenig’s birthday. Takei remembered him as “a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend” and thanked the fans who loved him.
In his statement, McGinnis praised Koenig’s warmth and versatility and noted how much he gave to fans through decades of convention appearances.
Family
Koenig was born in Chicago in 1936 to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. He married actress Judy Levitt in 1965; she died in 2022. Their son, actor Andrew Koenig, died in 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle.
