THE SHAPESHIFTING ICON WHO REINVENTED ROCK MUSIC

David Bowie

1947-2016 · Musician

Early Life

David Robert Jones was born on January 8, 1947, in Brixton, South London, and raised in Bromley. He developed an early interest in music and art, studying saxophone and performing in various bands as a teenager before adopting the stage name David Bowie in 1965 to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees.

Bowie spent several years navigating the British music industry with limited success, experimenting with different styles and influences, including mime and theater, before finding the breakthrough sound that would define his early career.

Rise to Fame

Bowie’s first major hit came in 1969 with “Space Oddity,” released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing. His true breakthrough arrived in 1972 with the concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, introducing his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust and establishing him as a defining figure of glam rock.

Throughout the 1970s, Bowie continued reinventing himself artistically, moving through personas and sounds including the Thin White Duke and the experimental “Berlin Trilogy” albums, Low, Heroes, and Lodger, recorded with Brian Eno.

Career Highlights

Bowie achieved his greatest commercial success with 1983’s Let’s Dance, which produced major hits and cemented his status as a global pop icon. Across his career, he sold well over 100 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bowie continued making acclaimed and experimental music into the 2000s and 2010s, culminating in his final album, Blackstar, released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. The album was later understood as a deliberate farewell, released just two days before his death.

Personal Life

Bowie was married to Angela Barnett from 1970 to 1980, with whom he had a son, filmmaker Duncan Jones. He later married supermodel Iman in 1992, and the couple had a daughter together; their marriage lasted until his death.

Bowie died on January 10, 2016, at his home in New York City, two days after his 69th birthday, following an 18-month battle with liver cancer that he had kept largely private. His death prompted an outpouring of global tribute, reflecting the breadth of his influence across music, fashion, and visual art.

Net Worth & Legacy

David Bowie’s estate was valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars at the time of his death, built through decades of record sales, songwriting royalties, touring, and his pioneering 1997 “Bowie Bonds,” which securitized future royalties from his early catalog.

From a South London art student to one of the most influential and constantly reinventing musicians in rock history, Bowie’s career redefined what a pop star could be, and his willingness to transform his sound, image, and persona continues to shape musicians and artists across genres.
