BOXING'S UNDISPUTED KING
Oleksandr Usyk
b. 1987 · Athlete
Early Life
Oleksandr Usyk was born on January 17, 1987, in Simferopol, in Crimea, Ukraine, to parents from Ukraine's northern regions. As a child, he initially pursued folk dancing and soccer before switching to boxing at age 15 in 2002, discovering the sport that would define his life relatively late compared to many elite fighters.
Usyk built an outstanding amateur career, compiling a record of 335 wins against just 15 losses. He won gold at the 2011 World Championships and capped his amateur run with an Olympic gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 2012 London Games, establishing himself as one of the most decorated amateur boxers of his generation before turning professional.
Rise to Fame
Usyk turned professional in 2013 and quickly established himself as a dominant force in the cruiserweight division, winning his first world title in 2016 against Krzysztof Głowacki. He became the first undisputed cruiserweight champion of the four-belt era in 2018 after winning the World Boxing Super Series tournament, defending his titles with notable wins including a victory over Tony Bellew.
Seeking a greater challenge, Usyk moved up to heavyweight in 2019, a division dominated by significantly larger fighters, and immediately began climbing the rankings despite conceding size and reach to nearly every opponent he faced.
Career Highlights
Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua twice, in 2021 and again in a 2022 rematch, to capture unified heavyweight titles despite being the smaller man in both fights. He then faced WBC champion Tyson Fury in May 2024, winning by split decision to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, and defeated Fury again in a December 2024 rematch by unanimous decision, settling any doubt about the first result.
In July 2025, Usyk knocked out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round to reclaim the undisputed heavyweight championship, becoming only the second two-time undisputed heavyweight champion in history after Muhammad Ali. Heading into 2026, speculation has swirled around a potential Usyk-Fury trilogy fight, with some reports suggesting a spring 2026 date, while Usyk himself has spoken about retiring after his next fight, aiming to step away from the sport around age 41.
Personal Life
Usyk has remained closely connected to his home country throughout the Russian invasion of Ukraine, using his platform to raise awareness and support for Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. He has spoken about his deep Orthodox Christian faith, which he credits as a central influence on his discipline and outlook both in and out of the ring.
He has founded Usyk17 Promotions, extending his involvement in the sport beyond competing, and has spoken about his plans to establish a sports academy once he retires from professional boxing, aiming to pass on his training philosophy to the next generation of fighters.
Net Worth & Legacy
Oleksandr Usyk's net worth is estimated in the tens of millions of dollars, built through purse earnings from his biggest fights, pay-per-view revenue, and endorsements accumulated over his professional career.
From an Olympic gold medalist who switched from folk dancing to boxing as a teenager to the first two-time undisputed heavyweight champion since Muhammad Ali, Usyk's career stands as one of the most technically accomplished in modern boxing history, and his success despite consistently facing larger opponents has cemented his reputation as one of the sport's smartest and most complete fighters.
