A LIFE IN BASKETBALL
Luka Dončić
b. 1999 · Athlete
Early Life
Luka Dončić was born on February 28, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to Mirjam Poterbin, who owns beauty salons, and Saša Dončić, a basketball coach and former professional player of Serbian descent. His parents divorced in 2008, and Luka’s mother was granted custody.
Dončić began playing organized basketball at age seven in Ljubljana, and by 13 he had joined the youth academy of Real Madrid, one of the most storied clubs in European basketball. He made his professional debut for Real Madrid’s senior team at just 16 years old, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history, and quickly established himself as one of the most gifted young players in Europe.
Rise to Fame
In 2018, at only 18 years old, Dončić led Real Madrid to the EuroLeague championship, winning both EuroLeague MVP and Final Four MVP honors in the same season — a rare feat that made him one of the most hyped international prospects ever to enter the NBA draft. He was selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 and immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a deal for Trae Young.
Dončić’s rookie season was historic: he averaged over 20 points with 5 or more rebounds and assists per game, joining an exclusive list that includes Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Tyreke Evans, and he won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award unanimously.
Career Highlights
Over his time with the Mavericks, Dončić became a perennial All-Star, earning six All-Star selections and six All-NBA First Team honors, and twice led the league in scoring, in 2024 and 2026. He scored a career-high 73 points in a single game in January 2024, and has recorded more than 80 career triple-doubles, placing him among the top players in NBA history for that statistic. In 2024, he led Dallas to the NBA Finals, where the Mavericks fell to the Boston Celtics in five games.
On February 2, 2025, Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and draft picks — a move widely regarded as one of the most significant and unexpected trades in NBA history, marking the first midseason trade involving two reigning All-NBA players. Dončić was reportedly not informed of the trade until it was already finalized, and he made his Lakers debut on February 10, 2025.
Dončić continued his elite play with the Lakers, capturing his second scoring title in 2026 and cementing his place as one of the league’s most dynamic offensive forces, known for his combination of size, passing vision, and clutch shot-making that earned him the nickname “Luka Magic.”
Personal Life
Dončić grew up admiring Greek star Vassilis Spanoulis and LeBron James — the same LeBron he would go on to play alongside with the Lakers. According to family accounts, he first touched a basketball at just seven months old, reflecting how deeply basketball was embedded in his upbringing.
He has worn the number 77 throughout much of his professional career, both with the Mavericks and after joining the Lakers, and remains closely connected to his native Slovenia, where his rise has made him a national sporting hero.
Net Worth & Legacy
Luka Dončić’s net worth is built on a combination of NBA salary and endorsements; in 2021 he signed a five-year, $207 million rookie extension that was the largest in NBA history at the time, and his overall earnings have grown substantially since through his Lakers contract and major brand partnerships.
From a EuroLeague MVP at 18 to a perennial NBA All-Star, scoring champion, and Finals participant who became the centerpiece of one of the most jarring trades the league has ever seen, Dončić has established himself as one of basketball’s defining international stars — a player whose combination of skill and stage presence has made him a global draw both in the NBA and back home in Slovenia.
